City commissioners will consider two bond issuances for KU's Gateway project on Tuesday

KU's Gateway project carries an $808.7 million price tag

If you follow KU's Gateway project, Tuesday's Lawrence City Commission meeting is the one to know. Commissioners will be asked to consider authorizing up to $75 million in STAR bonds and up to $25 million in Community Improvement District bonds. KU wants them issued now to keep the project on schedule.

The Lawrence Times reports the commission approved up to $94.6 million in local tax incentives in August 2025, so this vote is about issuing bonds for tax breaks they approved last year. The project includes renovating the football stadium and building a conference center and a mixed-use district with an outdoor plaza, hotel, student housing, parking and retail.

About 75% of Gateway's cost comes from donors, KU Athletics and private debt

Okay I'm confused about the question on the ballot about changing the wording in the Kansas Constitution on citizens voting.

“It states it's in article 1, section 5 of the Kansas Constitution but I cannot find it...what I found is Article 1 is executive and section 5 is about Governor's duties for legislature and then I wanted to search further for what subsection B and C say in the Kansas Constitution and I cannot find that. And what I…”

The Wrap

Hundreds of people gathered at John Taylor Park on Sunday for a Día de Muertos community altar with a twist: it honored the people who nourish us, including those who grow, harvest, package, process and serve our food. Community members could write names on paper hands, which were scattered around the altar. A tasty, tender tribute.
