Good morning, Lawrence. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 14th of July.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ken Lassman explains that some wasps sting and paralyze caterpillars to lay eggs while most wasps feed on flower nectar. He also notes that our local seasonal cycles have stayed much the same over time (a reminder of the natural heritage once observed by early residents).  The Lawrence Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Thirteen candidates are running for the Lawrence City Commission in the primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 5, with the top four advancing to the general election for two seats. Voters should note key dates—July 15 is the final day for registration and early voting begins July 16—as candidates share their views on issues such as affordable housing and government communication.  The Lawrence Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Swope Health CEO Jaron Ravin said about 20,000 Medicaid patients, roughly 40% of his care base, face a loss of benefits due to new federal changes in the tax and spending law. He urged patients to check their paperwork carefully — keeping accurate records may help them stay covered as the hospital prepares for a 5 to 12 million dollar funding cut.  KMBC
