CRIME NEWS

  • Lawrence police took a man into custody Tuesday after he threatened someone in a downtown parking garage with a paintball gun resembling an AR-style assault rifle—he was booked on charges of aggravated assault and no one was injured.  KCTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lawrence playwright and director Rita Rials will present her stage play 'Panther Burn: From the Fields of Struggle to the Road of Hope' on Saturday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center — it is based on her family's journey from Mississippi to Kansas amid racial injustice during Juneteenth and tickets are free. Local vendors will set up booths at 6 p.m. to welcome community members.  The Lawrence Times
  • The University of Kansas Wind Ensemble will represent the United States at the World Exposition in Osaka, Japan from June 25 to July 5. The ensemble will perform American music and partner with Osaka University of the Arts (including a July 4 show spotlighting US compositions).  University of Kansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three KU Libraries students, Margaret Baechle, Amanda Mills, and Sarah Thompson, were awarded the Rubinstein/Mason Award and will each receive a ($1,000) scholarship to pursue graduate studies in librarianship and archival studies. The award honors the late Joseph Rubinstein and late Alexandra Mason and recognizes the students’ contributions as library employees and leaders.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Tuesday’s meeting, Lawrence city commissioners approved a five-year capital improvement plan while nearly 20 residents asked for simpler budget details and more transparency—questions included rising city debt and how funds will cover new projects. Commissioners said city staff will address these concerns as they refine the plan.  The Lawrence Times
  • A University of Kansas scholar, Chris Koliba, published a study Tuesday, June 17th that reviews how science, truth and reason once underpinned democracy and how these standards have faded over time. He outlines methods for restoring accountability in governance — using historical examples from the Enlightenment to support his call for change.  University of Kansas

  • Mitch and Kasey Jones of Lawrence got married at Symphony in the Flint Hills on June 14 with 10 close guests at their small ceremony—almost 8,000 people joined the reception on the prairie.
