CULTURE NEWS

  • Watkins Museum will host an exhibition in its Community Gallery from Jan. 16 to March 14 that celebrates fifty years of KU’s Hall Center for the Humanities — featuring historical documents. A free reception with hors d’oeuvres and drinks is set 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21.  The Lawrence Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Molly Rose from Spire explained on KCTV5 that winter months lead to higher utility bills and offered simple tips to help customers save energy. The interview aired Jan. 13 at 2:26 p.m. and focused on practical advice + cost management.  KCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The KU Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering Department inducted two alumni into the CEAE Academy today. Phil Gibbs Sr. (class of 1966/67) and Gerardo Prado (class of 1995) were honored for their professional achievements and civic support.  University of Kansas
  • Superintendent Jeanice Swift will host Community Conversations to gather feedback from students, staff and families at local school buildings from Jan. 20 to Feb. 17. Meetings occur at New York Montessori School, district offices, Hillcrest Elementary, Woodlawn Elementary, and Billy Mills Middle School (no registration is required).  The Lawrence Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Plans to open a family emergency shelter were canceled Tuesday evening when city staff said insufficient funding forced the decision at a city commission meeting. The city will prioritize families with children through its existing homelessness response program (instead of launching a new shelter).  The Lawrence Times
