  • Angie Bauer of Tenants to Homeowners works with a team to use trauma-informed property management at Sunrise House and 73 supportive housing units to help residents who have experienced homelessness and other hardships stay housed. Her approach—centered on flexible rules and round-the-clock assistance—includes coordinating care services to reduce evictions and strengthen daily living skills.  The Lawrence Times
  • The City of Lawrence Parks, Recreation and Culture Department will host the 2025 Holiday Extravaganza at Sports Pavilion Lawrence on Saturday, December 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — over 240 local artisans will display handcrafted items in a free community marketplace.  City of Lawrence

  • The Bales Choral Society at KU will perform its fall concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at St. Lawrence Catholic Center. The program will feature John Rutter’s Gloria and other works led by visiting professor Wolfgang Reisinger — admission is free and doors open at 6:40 p.m.  University of Kansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Kansas debate team led by Rose Larson, Milwaukee and Luna Schultz, Houston ended the fall semester as the top-ranked team in the country according to the College Policy Debate Rankings. They compiled a 46-5 record across five tournaments and their coach praised the season as the team prepared for spring debates.  University of Kansas

  • Lawrence officials warned residents to stay home on Monday, Dec 1, after reports of rising crashes and sliding vehicles made roads dangerous — city crews plowed priority routes and pre-treated bridges as they urged drivers to clear streets for faster emergency response.  KCTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • KU School of Pharmacy researcher Zijun Wang published research in Nature Communications showing that early social isolation increases heroin seeking in mice by changing brain gene expression—her lab uses CRISPR-Cas9 to identify gene targets that may lead to new therapies for mental health and substance abuse disorders. The study builds on five years of work funded by national grants to better understand early life stress and its impacts.  University of Kansas

  • Lawrence native Zeke Mayo, who played on March 1 at Allen Fieldhouse, received racist online messages following a poor game as legal sports betting expanded in Missouri (raising concerns among college athletes).
