COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Friends of Lawrence Area Trails is hosting a public meeting at the Lawrence Public Library auditorium (707 Vermont St.) to share details on Cameron’s Bluff, a new trail system, park and open space under development on Evergy land along the Kansas River. The meeting runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a brief presentation at 5:45 p.m. followed by an open house for questions and feedback.  The Lawrence Times
  • Lawrence will host A Better Debate on housing on December 4 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Educational Support Center — a free event in partnership with the Kansas Leadership Center Journal that invites residents to discuss if Lawrence is doing enough to offer housing for everyone. Registration is encouraged to help organizers plan a balanced discussion.  City of Lawrence

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rebekka Schlichting, a University of Kansas assistant professor, released the YouTube series Baxoje Basics last month featuring the final interview with respected elder Pete Fee of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska—capturing tribal traditions and interviews to preserve a living history. New episodes will be released weekly to share the tribe’s cultural identity.  University of Kansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KU School of Business named its certificate program the True Blue Certificate in Banking after a gift from the Capitol Federal Foundation and alumnus John B. Dicus — the program, launched in fall, prepares students for commercial banking careers and funds a director position and student initiatives.  University of Kansas
  • The KU debate team—led by Rose Larson, Milwaukee, and Luna Schultz, Houston—won the 69th Franklin R. Shirley Classic Debate Tournament at Wake Forest University on November 15-17. They beat Emory University 3-0 in the final debate and became only the fourth KU team to win this championship.  University of Kansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • KU launched a new Kansas Flood Mapping Dashboard that uses data from the National Weather Service and the U.S. Geological Survey—an automated tool that updates every two hours to show flood extent and depth. The system, led by research professor Jude Kastens, will help emergency managers know where floods are and plan their response.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City of Lawrence updated its emergency winter shelter plan for the 2025 to 2026 season and will run sheltering solely at the Lawrence Community Shelter at 3655 East 25th Street. The shelter offers up to 223 beds, meals and free transit services via Lawrence Transit — guests under the influence or with pets are allowed if safe — and those seeking help should call 785 832 8864 or email [email protected] City of Lawrence
