COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lawrence Humane Society features Snoozy Susie, a 4-year-old Boxer mix that came to the shelter in August and is now looking for a home with dogs. She is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped, and her adoption fee is $150 (visit 1805 E. 19th St. from noon to 6 p.m. to meet her).  The Lawrence Times
  • Amid SNAP benefit confusion and federal legal debates, several community groups in Lawrence are offering free meals this week. Sanctuary Alliance is hosting a free meal pickup event on November 15th at 1 p.m.—located at Sunrise Project, 245 N. Fourth St.—while Hy-Vee stores offer discounted meals until November 14th.  The Lawrence Times

  • General Mills is hosting a hiring fair for the La Tiara plant — the facility will open next year to bring back local jobs after the company purchased La Tiara Tacos.  KCTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University Dance Company will perform its Fall Concert from November 14th to 16th at the Crafton-Preyer Theatre at Murphy Hall — the program features six choreographic works by faculty and students that link dance with science, including final piece WONDER by Jessica Chen inspired by stories of astronauts. Tickets are available in person or online for the 7 p.m. shows on November 14th–15th and the 2 p.m. performance on November 16th.  University of Kansas
  • Local artist Yvonne Klinksick will host an interactive art night at the shelter in Broken Arrow Park on Nov. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. — the event will display illuminated cut paper works made from community photos, feature interactive art stations and live harp music by Yuka Naito while offering light refreshments.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lawrence school district is accepting volunteer applications for a new AI advisory group to advise on technology policies, curriculum guidelines and data safety. Applicants must apply by Friday and selected members—including board, teacher, community and union representatives—will meet starting the week of Dec. 1 while the board plans to consider the proposal early next year.  The Lawrence Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials changed intersections on Iowa Street when the 19th and Iowa reopened Tuesday with limited turning space (due to reconstruction work) while the 21st/Becker intersection closed for rebuilding; traffic control remains unchanged. Bob Billings Parkway will have one lane each way today (with crews installing a temporary asphalt overlay) as work continues ahead of larger improvements, and the lane reduction is set to wrap up the week of November 17.  The Lawrence Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at the University of Kansas discovered that the human gene PARP14 helps regulate interferon and fights viruses such as COVID-19 and herpes. They said the gene’s dual role—both antiviral and proviral—could lead to new targets for treating viral and immune-related disorders.  University of Kansas
