COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Petunia is a 3-year-old pit bull available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society—she came as a stray three months ago and now lives in foster care where she learns to manage her energy and enjoys gentle cuddles. Her foster parent said she is nearly potty trained and a quiet companion who bonds with people and other calm dogs.  The Lawrence Times

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A site plan for a new Costco has been submitted and is under review in Lawrence—if approved, the warehouse club will be located northwest of George Williams Way and Mercato Drive near Rock Chalk Park.  KMBC
  • Costco submitted a proposal to open a full-service store with gas pumps, a Tire Center and food court south of Rock Chalk Park; the 22.6-acre project covers 983,328 square feet and 834 parking stalls. Permits will be issued after final applications are complete — the review is expected to take four to six weeks — as City staff review the site.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawrence Schools Foundation has launched the 'Let’s Lift Lawrence: Adopt a School Pantry' program and invited local businesses and organizations to donate funds, food, or volunteer services to keep school pantries stocked for over 1,000 students relying on SNAP benefits — schools will be closed during Thanksgiving week, heightening the need for support.  KMBC
  • KU Debate had an outstanding weekend from Oct. 31-Nov. 3 by excelling at tournaments hosted by Gonzaga University, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Alaska Anchorage—where a KU duo won the novice championship and a freshman team clinched the title. KU seniors earned a 35-4 record while 13 of 19 teams advanced to elimination rounds and five freshmen received speaker awards.  University of Kansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, a creative writing workshop took place at Akin Prairie Conservation in Douglas County where participants learned that less than 1% of untouched prairie remains— Margaret Renkl led the event and urged writers to see nature as a partner rather than an enemy. Attendees also learned about the native species and the area’s importance for conservation efforts.  The Lawrence Times
  • KU professor Melinda Adams published two scholarly articles on indigenous controlled burn practices—research that analyzed 650 tree ring sets from the San Carlos Apache Reservation and found controlled burns benefited trees. She will present her findings at the November 7 Research Luncheon at Watson Library in Lawrence—highlighting traditional fire stewardship for better land management.  KSNT 27

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Households receiving SNAP benefits will face a 50% reduction after new USDA guidance, which affects 187,000 families and may leave some with only a few dollars. Kansas Appleseed will host a webinar today at 1 p.m. — campaign director Haley Kottler urged federal action amid the ongoing shutdown.  KSNT 27
