BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new study by KU experts found that job applicants remain wary of using AI-driven hiring tools when companies claim their algorithms are unbiased. The research, which used a simulation with nearly 250 applicants, showed that candidates trust human judgment more when deciding who gets hired.  University of Kansas

CULTURE NEWS

  • New York Times columnist Margaret Renkl will lead a guided prairie walk at Akin Prairie from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and speak in conversation with KU professor Megan Kaminski during a talk and book signing at Raven Book Store from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 3—registration is free and buses will pick up attendees at Haworth Hall on Sunnyside Avenue.  The Lawrence Times
  • The City of Lawrence recently issued calls for local artists to propose ideas for two downtown public art projects. One call asks for a design for an 18 feet by 10 feet mural on the Vermont Street Garage wall with applications open until 11 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 and the other invites proposals for the 2026 Unmistakable Public Art Exhibition themed Celebrate the Spirit of Soccer/Fútbol in Lawrence that will be due by 11 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17—only Lawrence-based artists or teams 18 or older may apply.  The Lawrence Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At KU Thursday, experts discussed adding solar panels to irrigated fields to generate energy and recharge groundwater as part of an $880,000 project, addressing issues like low crop prices and tangled water rights. Other speakers explained plans to reduce algae blooms and improve water delivery, urging clearer policies for farms and cities (a move aimed at boosting local economy).  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kansas 4-H re-enrollment is open online until November 1 for youth who want to join the program and be eligible for leadership roles, state events, and local support – those who miss the deadline will lose access to premium auctions, county positions, and related awards.  KSNT 27
  • The Center for Digital Inclusion, the Institute for Policy & Social Research and the Life Span Institute at KU are co-hosting a science communication workshop that will take place on November 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Malott Room at the Kansas Union—registration is open and lunch will be provided.  University of Kansas
  • Haskell and KU launched a joint committee to boost collaboration and support for faculty and staff, with the group meeting for the first time on October 23rd. The committee collected survey responses to guide future projects + strengthen their long-term partnership.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Dole Institute announced its late fall programming at the university with discussions on U.S. diplomacy and domestic politics, including a conversation with Croatian Ambassador Pjer Šimunović on Nov. 13 and political insights from Amy Walter and Wichita Mayor Lily Wu. The schedule also features a debate on the electoral college and a Tribute to Veterans Gala on Nov. 9 — all events free and available in person and online.  University of Kansas
