COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Lawrence is asking residents to help name a snow plow by accepting name ideas until Sunday, Oct. 26. Top finalists will be announced on Oct. 27 and residents will vote until Nov. 2 — the winning name will be revealed on Nov. 5.  The Lawrence Times

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Amazon's global outage disrupted local deliveries in Lawrence — customers experienced delays with their orders as the company worked to fix the issue. The problem affected order processing on Oct. 20 and may continue to impact delivery schedules until it is resolved.  KCTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lied Center will premiere a jazz work honoring KU figures on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. The 15-movement suite by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will also create a fund to pay for free bus rides for Lawrence Public School students to attend performances.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KU chancellor Doug Girod joined a private White House meeting to share his views on a proposal that would offer federal funds in exchange for freezing tuition, limiting international student enrollment, and restricting employee political speech—six of nine universities have already rejected the plan. Education leaders warn that such restrictions may limit academic freedom and affect the future of higher education.  The Lawrence Times
  • The University of Kansas will host a ribbon-cutting for the new KU Conference Center at 11 a.m. Nov. 12 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium—Chancellor Douglas A. Girod will lead the event as Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, legislators, city officials and regional business leaders attend, with community members invited to tour the facility and RSVP by Nov. 10.  University of Kansas
  • KU Law was ranked No. 5 by National Jurist on October 20th for offering a strong legal education with low costs and good job outcomes — the school earned an A+ for affordability, employment, and bar pass rates.   • Goodwill’s Excel Center began classes for adult learners yesterday — offering programs that build essential job skills and education for those seeking new opportunities.  KCTV
  • On Monday, the Lawrence school board approved hiring ACI Boland Architects to design a nontraditional high school program at the former Centennial Elementary building—services costing $211,200 will fund planning, design, and coordination before the school opens in August next year. The board also postponed the Langston Hughes Elementary expansion by a year, with its completion now scheduled for summer 2027 to allow additional public input and local traffic improvements.  The Lawrence Times
  • The University of Kansas School of Engineering will host the Glenn Lange Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in Eaton Hall’s Spahr Classroom with internationally recognized geotechnical engineer Edward Kavazanjian— a Regents Professor at Arizona State University and National Academy of Engineering member. He will present his research on biogeotechnics to offer new insights on enhancing civil infrastructure resilience.  University of Kansas

  • The $30 million Colbern Rd. improvements project was completed on Oct.20 — the upgrades enhance roadway safety and ease traffic flow.  KCTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kansas WIC paused formula shipments to its local clinics after the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced on Oct. 20 that the government shutdown stopped pick-ups; clients can still access formula through authorized vendors on store shelves or at pharmacies, and providers are advised to use approved alternatives for specialized formulas.  KSNT 27

SPORTS NEWS

  • A KU study used GPS technology to track how far football players ran during games and practices — it found that practice loads were 20% to 40% higher than in games. The research measured 27 players over one season and may help coaches balance training sessions and reduce injury risk.  University of Kansas
