- ➤ The Lawrence Police Department is mourning its cherished K9, Cheeseburger—who served for 8 years and spent his retirement with Sgt. Ron Ivener’s family—as he passed away on Oct. 8 in the morning surrounded by those who cared for him. The department expressed deep gratitude for his loyal service to the community. KSNT 27
- ➤ Dillons announced its new store in The Crossing at KU will open on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 a.m. at 2205 Iowa St—most staff will move from its W. 23rd St. location—and the grand opening will feature a ribbon-cutting, live music, a mural dedication at 8 a.m., a community food drive at 10 a.m., and new amenities such as Murray’s Cheese, Starbucks shops, curbside pickup, delivery, a drive-thru pharmacy and an eco-friendly refrigeration system. - ➤ The University of Kansas will host the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee musical at Murphy Hall from October 24 through November 2 — the production directed by Theresa Buchheister and Katherine Leverenz features lively dance numbers and unique costumes. - ➤ Community and industry leaders, policymakers and scholars will gather at the University of Kansas on October 23 for the Kansas Economic Policy Conference to discuss sharing and protecting water—one of Kansas’ most important resources—and its effect on the state's economy. - ➤ The University of Kansas news roundup shows that four Jayhawks were endorsed for prestigious fellowships and KU engineering professor Elaina Sutley became the first recipient of the Blavatnik Award, while recent studies and grant awards boosted local innovation. KU will host its 113th Homecoming with community service events, hold a law conference today, and plan an earthquake drill on Oct. 16—activities that underscore the university’s ongoing impact on education. - ➤ KU Libraries has finalized a deal with ProQuest that expands digital access to millions of primary source items—newspapers, journals, and audio tracks—for students and researchers. - ➤ Three University of Kansas debate teams placed among the top 20 at an online British parliamentary tournament held Oct 4-5 at the University of Alaska where 108 teams from 27 colleges competed. - ➤ KU researchers have secured a $5 million grant to form the Midwest STEM Alliance that partners with elementary teachers in Kansas to improve science teaching. The project, involving Northern Iowa, Iowa State and Minnesota, will start by working with six local educators to use real-world examples—like water and agriculture—to guide hands-on lessons. - ➤ The University of Kansas Conference Center (located inside David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium) is now accepting event bookings; it offers 55,000 square feet of event space for groups ranging from 25 to 2,000 guests and includes a 15,000 square foot Main Hall with meeting rooms. - ➤ Trees in Kansas are changing colors for fall—experts say peak colors will occur from Oct. 25 to Oct. 28 and that by Nov. 10 most trees will have lost their leaves. Forester EJ Jamison recommends visiting spots like Baldwin Woods and joining the tour on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon to view the seasonal display. KSNT 27

- ➤ Cheeseburger, a 12-year-old retired Lawrence Police Department patrol service dog, died Wednesday morning at his home surrounded by family - he served for eight years and retired in June 2023. KCTV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Agriculture alerted the public on Thursday after finding the Asian longhorned tick on a dog in Franklin County last week. Officials will continue to monitor the invasive species and have asked veterinarians to remain alert for tick infestations. KCTV
