COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lawrence Public Library will host its fall book sale from Oct 10 to Oct 12, offering donated hardcover books for $2 and paperbacks and graphic novels for $1 at 707 Vermont St. — enter on the Kentucky Street side — with hours on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.; a members’ night will take place today from 5 to 7 p.m. with a $25 annual membership fee at the door.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Elaina Sutley, a KU Engineering professor and associate dean — KU’s first-ever laureate — won the 2025 Blavatnik National Award for Young Scientists in the Physical Sciences and Engineering category on Tuesday. Her work on natural hazards and community resilience earned her a $250,000 prize that will support future research.  University of Kansas
  • The University of Kansas School of Law will host nearly 90 legal scholars from 53 law schools for the annual Central States Law Schools Association conference in Green Hall starting tomorrow and continuing Oct. 11—scholars will share research and working papers to foster academic dialogue.  University of Kansas
  • KU's Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships endorsed three alumnae and one senior for the Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships—fellowships that support study in the United Kingdom. Regional panels will soon interview finalists in Chicago.  University of Kansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City contractors will temporarily divert the Kansas River Wastewater Treatment Plant's 8 million gallons per day flow into an 18-inch pipe—causing the water to flow 10 to 25 feet past the outlet—beginning Monday, October 13; boaters should avoid the area until the work ends on October 20.  City of Lawrence

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Warren Sears reviewed the Planning Calendar from Oct.8—covering a summer-like heat surge ahead of Friday rain, a grenade found behind a Lawrence home, and Kay Barnes’s swearing in as temporary Jackson County executive.  KCTV
  • Douglas County commissioners expanded the property tax rebate program for seniors and disabled veterans—voting 4-0 to raise the maximum rebate to $400 in 2026 while changing income rules. The county will accept applications from Jan. 15 until April 15 and will send more details with tax bills.  The Lawrence Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study by the University of Kansas led by Paula Fite found that high rates of depression and anxiety were common among detained youth regardless of charge—research from 276 juveniles highlights the need for consistent mental health screening in detention settings to help reduce recidivism. The findings suggest that early intervention and community-based supports could better address mental health issues before youth become involved in the justice system.  University of Kansas

  • USA Today's new database shows college football coaching salaries where Mizzou head coach Eli Drinkwitz earns $9 million per season and is tied for 10th highest nationally—while KU's Lance Leipold ranks 37th with $6.5 million and K-State's Chris Klieman ranks 46th with $5.25 million.  KCTV
  • The NCAA's Division I Administrative Committee approved a proposal that would let student-athletes and athletics department staff bet on professional sports, including wagering on teams like the Chiefs and Royals; the rule change will take effect Nov 1 if all NCAA divisions approve it. The move aims to reduce underground betting and includes measures for responsible gambling education — protecting the integrity of college games.  KCTV
