Good morning, Lawrence. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 8th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lawrence Humane Society features Flycatcher, a 6-year-old male shepherd mix brought in as a stray two and a half months ago — a smart, active dog who enjoys hikes, car rides, and quiet days — who is now available for adoption or fostering at the shelter on 1805 E. 19th St with an adoption fee of $150.  The Lawrence Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lawrence is hosting a variety of Halloween-themed events for adults and families this month—ranging from haunted bars and theatrical shows to ghost tours and fall festivals at local venues. Some events charge fees or require reservations, so participants should check details before attending.  The Lawrence Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Sept. 30, WalletHub, a personal finance company, released a study that compared over 1,300 small Kansas cities using 45 livability factors and ranked Leawood highest while Lawrence scored in the 85th percentile (the factors included job markets, education, health, affordability, quality of life, and safety). The study shows that moving to a small city may lower living costs and offer local charm (a trend that may influence future moves).  KSNT 27
  • Kansas farmers have seen a drop in Chinese soybean purchases and visited South Korea and Japan in September to meet with buyers—efforts that aim to open new markets as low prices and high input costs hurt this year’s harvest. The Kansas Soybean Commission will boost market development if China continues to avoid new-crop soybeans.  KSNT 27

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Kansas was awarded a $1.5M grant for the Southern Plains American Indian Teaching Pathways Project—a five-year teacher training program that partners KU with Haskell to enroll Native community candidates for certification across Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. The grant funds tuition, fees, stipends and educational resources to support new teachers serving Native schools.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City of Lawrence is repairing a critical sanitary sewer main on 27th St. east of Haskell Ave after crews discovered a serious issue. The repairs require closing Bonanza, Harper, and Rawhide south of 27th St—which will remain closed for 2 to 3 weeks with traffic detoured to Maverick Ln. and Prairie Park Nature Center visitors advised to use 28th Terr.  City of Lawrence
  • Missouri and Kansas food assistance programs may see changes if the government shutdown continues, as experts warn that WIC funding might run out and SNAP benefits could be delayed after today. State officials say benefits are being processed normally now but a prolonged shutdown would force states to use additional funds.  KMBC

HEALTH NEWS

  • A KU psychologist watched 90 teen girls for three years using eye-tracking glasses during speeches to two judges—one friendly and one neutral—to study if avoiding negative feedback led to more anxiety. Girls who looked away from the neutral judge later reported higher anxiety, and future studies will include parents to understand family impacts.  University of Kansas
