  • A Free State High School senior, Adrian Mendoza, saved a woman's life today at Pioneer Ridge Independent Living by using the Heimlich maneuver—he learned the technique during the Lawrence Police Department’s Teen Police Academy. His quick action during his after-school job shows the value of local training in life-saving moments.  KCTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Lawrence and the Cultural Arts Commission have asked local and regional artists to apply for the 2026 Unmistakable Public Art Exhibition + which will celebrate soccer in line with the upcoming World Cup. The application opens October 6 and closes at 11:00 p.m. on November 17.  City of Lawrence
  • Kansas Music Hall of Fame band Son Venezuela from Lawrence will perform salsa and Caribbean rhythms at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library's Marvin Auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 12 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.—admission is free.  KSNT 27

  • Soybean farmers in Kansas and Missouri are bracing for financial hits as China has not bought U.S. soybeans since May—this trade tension adds pressure during harvest season. Local groups say the halt in purchases could worsen income challenges in rural areas.  KMBC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KU and Haskell have launched the Southern Plains American Indian Teaching Pathways Project—backed by a $1.5 million grant—to recruit and train 15 students for future teaching roles at schools serving Native students. The program covers tuition, technology, books and a monthly stipend while providing early career mentorship in partnered schools across Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma.  The Lawrence Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawrence Transit is talking with bus riders about a $3 fare for on-demand rides—fixed-route and paratransit services will remain free. The Connected City Advisory Board will see the plan on October 20 and vote on it on November 17, with fares set to begin in 2026.  City of Lawrence
  • Lawrence public officials and civic professionals met at the Lawrence Public Library on Oct 6 to discuss how online threats and new board meeting rules affect free speech. Panelists including city commissioner Amber Sellers and board member Kelly Jones noted changes in public comment procedures — such as earlier sign-ups — and urged continued community engagement.  The Lawrence Times

  • LMH Health has named Dr. Shelly Kortkamp as its new president and CEO, making her the first woman and first physician in the hospital (104-year history). She will start on Nov. 10 and her family will move to Douglas County this fall.  The Lawrence Times
  • KU researchers delivered a Resilience Alliance program over 12 weeks that reduced secondary traumatic stress among child welfare workers and improved their resilience—helping ease work stress and support better outcomes for families. The study was published on October 6.  University of Kansas
