ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The Critical Materials Crossroads team—led by UMKC with partners from the University of Kansas and Kansas Geological Survey—was named one of 15 finalists for the NSF Regional Innovation Engines award and will be assessed on-site in January to decide if it will receive up to $160 million over the next 10 years to boost domestic manufacturing and job growth. This effort aims to reduce reliance on foreign materials and strengthen the regional economy. University of Kansas
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Matt Hammer, Harvesters Communications Manager, said the government shutdown could worsen food insecurity if it lasts too long since only 15% of the charity’s support comes from federal sources—SNAP and WIC funding ends in October and many federal workers and military members may miss paychecks and need food assistance. - ➤ The City of Lawrence has launched its 2026 Unmistakable Events Grant Program — formerly known as the TGT Grant Program — managed by the Parks, Recreation and Culture department to support public events that celebrate the city and boost tourism.
