- ➤ Ricky Ricardo is a pit bull aged 1 year and 9 months who escaped euthanasia after transferring from a rural shelter to the Lawrence Humane Society, but he has declined after 10 months without a consistent home. The shelter now seeks a foster or permanent placement for him and offers him for adoption for $150 + he is known for enjoying car rides. The Lawrence Times
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two students were arrested after a small fire at Lawrence High School on Monday and officials said the district will improve parent alerts—delayed messages caused confusion—while no injuries were reported. The Lawrence Times
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that Kansas crop harvests, including corn, soybean, sorghum and sunflower, are behind last year's pace due to much more rain than usual in late summer—farmers expect drier weather in October and November that may help them catch up. Experts warn that the wet conditions have delayed work and increased the risk of crop damage as harvest season continues. KSNT 27
- ➤ A report by the Institute for Research & Science shows that from 2011 to 2023, over 7,000 KU research-funded employees built careers nationwide—with nearly 40% working in Kansas. - ➤ The University of Kansas secured a three-year $750,000 grant to expand career pathways for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities by growing its Inclusive Research Learning Series—designed to involve research teams with real lived experience. The project will work with three university centers—test new tools and gather feedback to break barriers in traditional research practices. University of Kansas
- ➤ The University of Kansas announced 17 faculty from the Lawrence and KU Medical Center campuses will be honored at the University Teaching Awards ceremony—set for 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Jayhawk Welcome Center, and all members of the KU community are invited to attend. University of Kansas

- ➤ Lawrence officials and civic professionals will join a panel on civility in civic discourse on Monday, Oct. 6 at the Lawrence Public Library auditorium to discuss respectful public dialogue. Panelists include elected representatives, a police chief, and education and legal experts, and the event is free+no registration is required. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ The City of Lawrence will host an Energy Conservation Fair on Oct. 18 at the Lawrence Public Library at 707 Vermont St—residents can learn about weatherization, renewable energy, home energy audits, and utility programs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and encourages residents to use Lawrence Transit—a convenient travel option.
