COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last Saturday, Haskell held a bison harvest where community members gathered early to chat and snack on hackberries while waiting for a bison donated by the Osage Nation to arrive late. The animal was processed quickly following a traditional method — a sign of shared cultural practices — and the event brought together Native and non-Native participants for a meaningful celebration.  The Lawrence Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Monday morning fire at Lawrence High School's locker room forced an evacuation and was quickly controlled by a sprinkler head—officials reported moderate smoke and no injuries, and they investigated the cause.  KCTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • KU professor Jonathan P. Lamb released a book titled 'How the World Became a Book in Shakespeare’s England' that shows how bookish language shaped ideas in literature, science, religion and politics during the 16th and 17th centuries—he gathered 5,000 examples with KU students to support his research. The book, published by Cambridge University Press, explains how language from Shakespeare’s era still influences how we think today.  University of Kansas
  • Max Cooper, a 23-year-old former KU student, wowed all four judges on NBC’s The Voice when he auditioned last week by performing 'Cooler Than Me'—he chose Michael Bublé as his coach and now prepares to release new music and tour.  KSNT 27

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kansas Law Review’s 2025 Symposium will be held on Oct. 17 at the University of Kansas School of Law in Green Hall (check-in and breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m.) and will bring together legal experts to discuss state constitutional litigation to advance civil rights and liberties. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters in November will elect two city commissioners and three school board members while upcoming forums let residents learn about the candidates. The Coalition for Collaborative Governance will host a candidate conversation at the Lawrence Public Library on Oct. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.—the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce will hold a city commission forum on Oct. 8 from noon to 1 p.m. with a live broadcast on KLWN.  The Lawrence Times
