COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three-year-old husky Lilya, known for her love of pup cups and friendly nature, is featured as this week’s Pet of the Week at the Lawrence Humane Society. She is spayed, vaccinated and well-trained—adopters can visit the shelter at 1805 E. 19th St. or call 785-843-6835.  The Lawrence Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Emily Mulvaney’s solo art show 'Preservation of Bodies' will open in Lawrence at Off-Site Art Space on Friday, Sept. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m.—the exhibition features bioplastics and bacteria that shift pigment to explore specimen preservation. The exhibit will run until Oct. 25 and will include a closing artist talk on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The Lawrence Times
  • Director Michelle Miller uses her love of science to lead KU’s production of Silent Sky, a play about astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt that will run Oct. 3-5 at the Crafton-Preyer Theatre. The show will also feature Physics professor Allison Kirkpatrick—who will discuss the past struggles of women in science—to tie historical challenges to today’s issues.  University of Kansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Lawrence school board approved a $1 raise for education support professionals by moving the minimum hourly wage from $14.02 to $15.46 and adding benefits like full insurance, illness leave, and a new catastrophic leave pool—98% of union members had ratified the 2025-26 contract before the vote.  The Lawrence Times
  • Hilltop Child Development Center announced that most classrooms at its west campus will close temporarily due to staffing shortages and past challenges — affected children will move to the main campus, with the center closing at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 and new classroom visits scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.  The Lawrence Times

  • City staff will hold a public hearing on the Community Development Block Grant and Home Investment Partnerships Programs at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14 in Meeting Room A at the Lawrence Public Library—attendees can join in person as the session reviews past performance and gathers suggestions for future projects.  City of Lawrence
