CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Annual Plaza Art Fair will take place soon downtown as part of revitalization efforts—organizers expect the event to highlight local art and community projects. KCTV
- ➤ A free reception and walking tour of the Unmistakable Public Art Exhibition will take place on Friday, Sept. 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Parks, Recreation and Culture administrative offices in South Park — the event features innovative artworks including temporary tree installations and live performance pieces that celebrate both fleeting and permanent art. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Google will kick off its weeklong event—Falling into AI—on Sept. 29 at the Kansas Union Woodruff Room from 1 to 4 p.m. Jayhawk students, staff and faculty will join university researchers in sessions that explore AI in education and research. University of Kansas
- ➤ The Lawrence school district announced plans on Friday to open the old Centennial building for a small high school program and to expand Langston Hughes Elementary with extra classrooms. Both projects will open in August and aim to offer nontraditional learning options and ease overcrowding—pending board approval. The Lawrence Times
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Engineers are running a 10-day water injection dredging pilot test at Tuttle Creek Lake to clear sediment that has reduced the lake’s water storage by nearly half—this test will continue until Sept. 27. Scientists from Kansas State and the U.S. Geological Survey are monitoring sediment flow downstream to check its impact on water quality for local residents. The Lawrence Times
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Kansas Board of Regents has proposed a budget plan that cuts this year’s state money by $4.6 million and will invest $5.5 million in Blueprint for Literacy along with $15 million for energy research. The proposal—crafted as a partnership with universities—is due to be sent to the governor by Oct. 1. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ The mayor described the long vacant school building as an embarrassment — he is pushing for receivership proceedings to bring it under control in Lawrence. KCTV
- ➤ Lawrence will see multiple road, lane, parking lot, and intersection closures starting Monday, Sept. 22 for construction projects including the Bob Billings Improvement Project, waterline replacement on 27th Street and Haskell Avenue, fiber installation on Kasold Drive, and dredging near Burcham Park—each work zone has its own schedule with some ending in early November. The city will also close Fambrough Drive/11th Street on KU game days to keep pedestrians safe and manage traffic before and after home games. The Lawrence Times
