- ➤ A new six-panel mural honoring La Yarda will have a ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 on the Lawrence Loop trail at Eighth and Delaware—Lawrence artist Javy Ortiz painted the panels after meeting local families to share their history with Mexican American railroad workers. Mariachi Habanero will lead a short walk to a reception at Van Go with live music and food. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ Brutus, a 3-year-old pit bull at the Lawrence Humane shelter, is in need of a loving home due to declining health from stress—shelter staff describe him as gentle with kids and a great companion. The shelter at 1805 E. 19th St. welcomes adopters and foster parents daily from noon to 6 p.m. The Lawrence Times

- ➤ Paranormal experts are hosting ghost tours across northeast Kansas this fall as Halloween nears. In Lawrence, a theatrical tour will guide visitors to local haunted sites from Oct. 23-25 while other events in Emporia and Topeka offer historic ghost hunts. KSNT 27
- ➤ KU Theatre is opening its season with 'Silent Sky,' a play by Lauren Gunderson that tells the true story of astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt and will run from Oct. 3—Oct. 5 in the transformed Crafton-Preyer Theatre at Murphy Hall. The production will include an ASL-interpreted performance on Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.—and public telescope viewings will follow each show. University of Kansas
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ KU Debate teams swept the Bear-Shock debate tournament at Missouri State University from Sept. 12-14 — first-year debaters captured the top two varsity and top three junior varsity spots. The teams defeated other schools and earned individual awards, and they will compete next at the University of Kentucky from Sept. 27-29. University of Kansas
- ➤ A study by the University of Kansas shows that asking students how they feel about local climate data sparked deeper classroom discussions and moved them from worry to hopeful action. Researchers used a method called Community Science Data Talks (CSDTs) in classrooms across two countries and plan to train more teachers to use the tool in future lessons. University of Kansas
- ➤ Kansas State University's SafeRide program continues to offer subsidized late-night rides on Thursday through Saturday — helping around 4,000 students travel safely each year while the University of Kansas discontinued its free service and now operates a campus-only SafeBus route from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. KSNT 27
