CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Lawrence will host a free opening reception and guided walking tour of the Unmistakable Public Art Exhibition on Final Friday, September 26 at 5:30 p.m. in South Park at 1141 Massachusetts Street — community members may also explore the artworks anytime with the Otocast mobile app.  City of Lawrence
  • The University Press of Kansas launched Plainspoken Books, a new nonfiction imprint that focuses on Midwest stories for national conversations—its debut title, Whirlwind by Bill Kurtis, is set to publish in September. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Union members from the school district met with board members Monday to demand a living wage for education support specialists, with over 140 supporters signing in support. Board members said they can do more as negotiations continue and the next meeting is set for today from 5 to 7 p.m. at district offices—McDonald Drive.  The Lawrence Times
  • The Lawrence school board voted unanimously Monday to add esports in middle and high schools with a plan that may cost up to $66,000 over three years from capital funds — teams will start practice in November and compete from December to January.  The Lawrence Times
  • Entrepreneur and KU alum Elyce Arons, co-founder of the Kate Spade and Frances Valentine brands, will return to campus on September 26 for a fireside chat at 2 p.m. at the Burge Union — she will also sign her New York Times best-selling book and join other campus events including a KU vs. Cincinnati game and a campus tour.  University of Kansas

  • Kansas baseball announced two exhibition games in October as the Jayhawks will play Bradley on October 11th and host Kansas State on October 25th. The team ended a strong season with a 43 to 17 record — reaching its first NCAA Tournament since 2014 and setting the stage for these fall matchups.  KSNT 27
