  • Shaka Khan, a 6-year-old pit bull at Lawrence Humane, is described as a calm nanny dog ideal for families with kids—she is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped and can be adopted at 1805 E. 19th St. daily from noon to 6 p.m.  The Lawrence Times

CRIME NEWS

  • A 38-year-old man allegedly brandished a knife during a police encounter—he was shot by deputies and now faces an assault charge on an officer—while he remains in jail.  KCTV
  • Lawrence police provided the names of two motorcyclists killed in separate crashes in August—Hunter Douglas Thuro died in a collision near 21st Street and Naismith Drive on Aug. 8 and Todd Joseph Rodman died after a crash at a roundabout on Aug. 28.  The Lawrence Times
  • A Lawrence man, Aaron B. Wright, 63, was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Jina Reyes after her body was found with multiple stab wounds behind the former VFW building on Massachusetts Street & he appeared via videoconference in court with his bond set at $1 million.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Educate & Act series at KU returns for its sixth year and will host three virtual events this fall — the first on Sept.9 will focus on Media and Accountability, followed by sessions on voting rights on Oct.7 and higher education’s role in democracy on Nov.12 for students, faculty, staff and the community.  University of Kansas
  • KU professor Yong Zhao and co-authors published a new book called Agents of Impact — a guide that shows schools how to change teaching methods to help every student matter by using technology and problem-solving skills.  University of Kansas
  • Twelve University instructors earned promotions at the Lawrence and Edwards campuses after summer reviews, and university leaders congratulated them. The new roles started with the fall semester — showing their strong teaching and mentoring skills.  University of Kansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study from the University of Kansas shows that cellophane bees bounce back from cold shocks faster than honeybees — a trait that helps them pollinate early spring crops but could be at risk from warmer weather. Researchers on campus collected bees and measured how repeated cold exposure slows their recovery and may lower survival rates.  University of Kansas
