COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Following Clear the Shelter Day over the weekend, Lawrence Humane waived adoption fees for more than a dozen dogs while nearly 100 animals found new homes. The fee waiver stays until 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31—ensuring more loved pets can join local families.  The Lawrence Times
  • Officer Simoncic, a fallen KCKPD member, was known for his dedication to fitness and education—he regularly visited Banneker Elementary as part of the Lead to Read program. Gym owner Jay Fleer recalled meeting him at Mission Barbell Club and noted his strong commitment that went beyond the gym, showing he truly cared for the children.  KCTV

CRIME NEWS

  • Farmers Insurance said a data hack exposed names, addresses, driver's license numbers and parts of Social Security numbers for over one million customers when a vendor alerted the firm on May 30, and notices were sent starting Aug 22. The company is offering free identity theft services for 24 months—Kansas customers will learn more as details are provided.  KSNT 27

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The KU Department of Theatre & Dance recognized 50 students — awarding about $215,000 in scholarships for academic merit for the 2025-26 academic year. The awards were announced on Tuesday, August 26th to honor the students’ talents in theatre and dance.  University of Kansas
  • Researchers and faculty at KU’s Electrical Engineering & Computer Science department and I2S received redesignation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Research by the NSA on Tuesday, making KU the only school in Kansas with both CAE-R and CAE-CD designations — a title that remains through academic year 2030.  University of Kansas
  • University of Kansas undergraduates were chosen for the 2025 Millennium Fellowship, a leadership program run by the Millennium Campus Network & United Nations Academic Impact after a competitive selection from over 60,000 applicants. The students will work on local projects addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals and will receive certificates when they complete their projects in November.  University of Kansas

HEALTH NEWS

  • Three Narcan vending machines were installed this week in Lawrence as part of a grant expansion that now will support eight machines—providing naloxone kits, fentanyl test strips, and trauma-informed care training. Lawrence’s Homeless Solutions Division partnered with Schmidt Vending to repurpose used machines, stretching the funding from Kansas Fights Addiction.  The Lawrence Times
  • The FDA announced that a North Carolina company is recalling two lots of dog and cat food that may be contaminated with salmonella and listeria, putting people and pets at risk. The frozen one pound bricks were distributed nationwide—including in Kansas—from July 2 to Aug. 21, and pet owners should contact Viva Raw for a refund.  KSNT 27
