ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A runner was struck by a vehicle just before 5:30 a.m. Friday on North 1400 Road between Lawrence and Eudora and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries while the driver received minor injuries—crash investigators have closed the road and urge drivers to use alternate routes.  The Lawrence Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Kansas will rededicate David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium to honor 130 Jayhawks who died in World War I when a ceremony is held on Aug. 29 at 2:30 p.m. on Garlinghouse Plaza outside the new convention center — parking closures are in effect ahead of a football game later that evening.  University of Kansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lawrence school board will consider adding esports teams to middle and high schools on Monday at 6 p.m. at district offices—if approved, practices will begin in November and new equipment will be purchased with support from grants and sponsorships.  The Lawrence Times
  • A KU doctoral candidate showed in a new paper published on August 22nd that AI does not have true moral judgment but uses transformer models—tools that consider context—to mimic human moral reasoning. The study explains that while machines only imitate ethical behavior, careful alignment may help guide AI systems to do no harm.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A couple of blocks of 11th Street will close today at 12:30 p.m. for KU football home games to boost pedestrian safety—closures will last until about 45 minutes after the game, while lane changes on Haskell Avenue for a water main project are set to be modified Tuesday with work wrapping up by November.   The Lawrence Times
