CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Spencer Museum of Art at KU hosts the exhibit 'Soundings: Making Culture at Sea' through Dec. 14, showing works from its collection and special loans that connect Kansas to ocean themes. The exhibit links art to local history and climate studies — featuring a Winslow Homer painting and a carved wooden mermaid — to show how the sea still matters here. University of Kansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Lawrence reported that its recycling contamination rate reached 16.2% this spring, exceeding the 10% target set by HAMM—this overage led to extra fees for each recycling load that ranged between $37,500—$75,000 a year. The extra fees diverted funds from community improvements, and residents are urged to sort recyclables carefully. City of Lawrence
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawrence city commissioners approved up to $94.6M in tax breaks for KU’s Gateway District project last week despite not being fully informed about a planned $300M donation for KU Athletics—the donation did not change the vote, officials said, even as KU faculty and local residents raised concerns about transparency and potential community cost impacts. The tax incentives are expected to speed up project completion and generate tax revenue, while critics question the process and level of community input. The Lawrence Times
