Lawrence Humane Society is waiving adoption fees for 19 cats and dogs through the rest of August.
Residents can visit the shelter (1805 E. 19th St.) daily from noon to 6 p.m. to meet and potentially adopt a pet.
Lawrence residents can join the annual Rexy Run to support families facing pediatric cancer, benefiting 5-year-old Griffin Scanlon.
The event includes 5K and 10K races starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 with a Dino Dash for young children, hosted by Baby Jay’s Legacy of Hope.

Outdoors Unscripted awarded six grant winners $1,000 each to create art inspired by Douglas County landscapes.
They will present their projects on Thursday, Dec. 10 - from 5 to 9 p.m. - at Lumberyard Arts Center in Baldwin City.
