ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A chihuahua was killed in a dog attack at a Lawrence park, and its owner spoke on KCTV5 – urging pet owners to leash their dogs – to warn others of the danger of letting pets roam unchecked. KCTV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Douglas County deputy Brandon Lewis lost his law enforcement certification after he falsely reported the crash location on November 4 when his county vehicle slid on wet pavement—an investigation later determined that the incident occurred on Interstate 35 between Cassoday and Emporia rather than near Lawrence. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ A Lawrence woman was injured on August 10 at Centennial Skate Park when an unleashed dog attacked her, leaving her with a severe bite on the arm and a broken finger while her Chihuahua died, and police took the suspect dog to the Humane Society for investigation + her other two dogs were unharmed. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Six bands have been confirmed for the Kansas State Fiddle — Picking Championship with two spots open for local folk or bluegrass groups; the event will be held on Aug. 24 at South Park in Lawrence. Registration will be open until the festival and a winner will get $500 — with the winning band performing at the Champions Concert at the Wallnut Valley Festival on Sept. 17. KSNT 27
- ➤ Today, the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas opens its fall exhibition Soundings: Making Culture at Sea, which examines ocean art and runs through Dec. 14. The museum will open My Mother’s Tongue Ties Me Together on August 26 and In’zhúje’waxóbe: Return of the Sacred Red Rock on September 9 — both shows feature local artists and offer free admission. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday the Lawrence school board set a maximum mill levy of 52.333 for the 2025-26 budget—raising property taxes slightly and scheduling public hearings on Sept. 8 for community input. Board President GR Gordon-Ross said the decision follows state funding rules that factor in rising property values and lower enrollment. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ Lawrence’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted 4–3 to recommend that rec centers remain free, saying that staff proposals to charge adults $12 per month would create barriers for residents — a recommendation now shared with the city commission as officials consider fee options that still keep children's access free. The board's action comes amid debates over how best to balance community access and budget constraints. The Lawrence Times

- ➤ Kansas volleyball held media day Monday as it prepared for the 2025 season after last season's tournament exit and key player departures.
