COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Perry Methodist United Church’s blessing box, providing food and hygiene items since 2019, was vandalized last week when its glass was shattered but is now repaired (new doors are in place) and continues to accept donations of non-perishable items for those in need. Outreach Coordinator Paula Hladky said the community was disappointed by the damage but is relieved that the box has been restored.  KSNT 27
  • The Lawrence Humane Society features Whisky, a 1 1/2-year-old Great Dane mix weighing 55 pounds with a shy and sensitive nature who enjoys dog playgroups. The shelter advises potential adopters to give her time to warm up and welcomes visits at 1805 E. 19th St. daily from noon to 6 p.m.—they also accept inquiries by phone or email.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ATLAS research fellows at the University of Kansas are testing new AI tools that adapt assessments to each student's ability, helping English learners and those with significant cognitive disabilities. Victoria Quirk is comparing hierarchical models while Pragati Maheshwary is using human-informed AI for early item drafting—both are set to complete their projects in spring 2026.  University of Kansas

  • Early returns for the Lawrence City Commission primary election show 13 candidates and a 7.55% turnout by 3 p.m. Incumbent Bart Littlejohn is running for another term while Commissioner Lisa Larsen did not file for reelection — the top four vote-getters will advance to the Nov. 5 general election as ballots continue to be counted.  The Lawrence Times
