COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lawrence vendor market Blk & Brwn Market will take place on Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marriott SpringHill Suites, 1 Riverfront Plaza—organizers including Douglas County CORE and local entrepreneurs plan to uplift Black and brown business owners with more than 30 vendors already confirmed.  The Lawrence Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new live music calendar for August shows that Kansas City and nearby venues will host many future concerts. The list features a show at Granada in Lawrence by the Acacia Strain and Bodysnatcher on August 1—pop icon Cyndi Lauper’s farewell tour in Bonner Springs on August 9—and Lil Wayne’s concert at T-Mobile Center on August 26.  FOX 4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KU nuclear physicists working on CERN’s ALICE experiment made gold for a fraction of a second from lead on Wednesday, July 30 using ultra-peripheral collisions — a process that may help guide future studies of high-energy particle interactions.  University of Kansas
  • A Lawrence family is calling for changes after 15-year-old Shawn Collier faced cyberbullying when a nude picture spread at Free State High School on May 6 and police took corrective action while school officials are reviewing their response — the family hopes these measures will better protect students in the future.  KMBC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, KDOT announced that Kansas Highway 10 in western Lawrence will be reduced to one lane for construction work, with flaggers directing traffic near the Sixth Street/U.S. Highway 40 interchange today and on Aug. 1. Flaggers will also control traffic over Yankee Tank Creek from today through Aug. 6 with work running from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day + motorists should plan for delays as the project widens the South Lawrence Trafficway into a four-lane highway.  The Lawrence Times
  • The City of Lawrence is considering proposals to raise downtown parking fees by increasing permit prices, meter fines, and extending enforcement hours to 9 p.m.—city officials say these changes will help keep the self-funded parking system stable while workers worry about higher costs. Local employees and business owners say the proposed rate hikes could make parking a heavier burden on their daily expenses.  The Lawrence Times
