- ➤ Yesterday, disability advocates celebrated the 35th anniversary of the ADA at the Lawrence Public Library by sharing personal stories and demonstrating Adaptive Use Musical Instruments—software that makes music by tracking movement. Local leaders discussed changes to boost accessibility, including plans for an accessible kayak launch and improvements to sidewalks amid frozen federal funding. The Lawrence Times
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Song of the Sword, a 1986 sword-and-sorcery film made by a local cast and crew, has been re-edited for a special screening at Liberty Hall and will premiere at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. Joel Sanderson trimmed the film to enhance sound and colors—preserving its local charm—and a panel discussion with the cast and crew will follow. The Lawrence Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Federal education grants resumed flowing into Lawrence Public Schools after the federal government reversed a freeze that had cost the district more than $468K. Two-thirds of the funds will be used for staff recruitment, training and retention and about $159K will support programs for English language learners. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ The Lawrence school board will consider a tentative agreement that offers teachers an approximate 3% raise—including an $800 boost to base pay—to go into effect in the 2025-26 school year, and will also review proposed increases to student fees for preschool and certain high school courses during its meeting scheduled for Monday, July 28 at 6 p.m. at district offices on McDonald Drive.
