  • Sarah is a one-year-old pit bull at the Lawrence Humane Society whose high jumps in her kennel turn into calm, friendly behavior during Mass Street Mutt outings. The shelter has cared for her for three months and offers her for fostering or adoption for $25 — interested adopters can contact the society during open hours.  The Lawrence Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Carissa Schmidt, 22, is recovering at the University of Kansas hospital after being shot in a domestic violence incident on July 17 in Lawrence — police reported her ex-partner later took his own life — while her loved ones have raised $3,775 of a $10,000 goal to cover her medical bills.  The Lawrence Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lied Across Kansas announced its fall 2025 and spring 2026 schedule featuring two bands that will perform in eight rural Kansas locations. The program brings live music and free workshops for schools, with The Westerlies performing Nov. 19—21 and Our Band performing Apr. 6—10.  KSNT 27

EDUCATION NEWS

  • About 20 paleontologists, data scientists and journal editors will meet Aug. 4-5 at KU Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum to improve how research data is shared—focusing on FAIR practices and better credit for fieldwork. The workshop, supported by the NSF, will update traditional publication methods to make data more accessible for the scientific community and public.  University of Kansas
  • A University of Kansas study found that readers rated news releases as more believable when a person wrote them—test participants trusted human words over those made by AI. The research released Tuesday, July 22 compared different message styles and will help companies use AI in future crisis situations—emphasizing the need for clear, honest messages.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lawrence Transit System’s TIP Amendment is open for public comment from July 22 to August 6 and shows new costs and schedules for road work, bike paths, and transit. The Lawrence-Douglas County MPO Policy Board will review and approve the plan on August 21—ensuring it meets federal rules and updated USDOT guidance.  City of Lawrence
  • Kansas DCF announced on July 22 that it awarded contracts for a new child welfare system costing $100 million to update its old systems and improve data sharing and case management. The four-year contracts with RedMane Technology, Maximus U.S. Services and CSG Government Solutions — which include optional three-year renewals — will use state and federal funds.  KSNT 27
