COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Claudia Wilch, 73, at Babcock Place suffered from high temperatures last week that nearly made her and her cat Biscuit ill due to a malfunctioning air conditioner. The Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority has received the parts needed—one for her unit and one for the hallways—and repair work will take place Tuesday and Thursday as high temperatures continue.  The Lawrence Times

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 3, a 40-year-old woman was dropped off at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with apparent stab wounds and left without treatment after not explaining how she was injured—police are investigating a possible stabbing near 6th and Michigan.  KCTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kayakers and Friends of the Kaw volunteers are cleaning up trash on the Kansas River sandbars+ they remove tires, plastic bottles and other debris to cut pollution. They hope to finish cleaning every listed site by 2030+ and bring a fresher look to the river.  The Lawrence Times
  • On July 3, the Kansas Geological Survey received a $10,000 donation from NextEra Energy Resources earmarked for developing an experimental solar array in southwest Kansas. Local farmers and electrical utilities are partnering on the project—aiming to generate power and safeguard water resources.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 1, more than 100 new Kansas laws went into effect — lawmakers expanded the 'Slow Down, Move Over' law, consolidated childcare programs, adjusted child support rules and allowed law enforcement to sell seized guns. New license plate designs such as the blackout style are available for purchase — drivers who do not move over for flashing vehicles may face fines.  FOX 4
