COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, a Lawrence couple had their power cut for about 4.5 hours during high heat—raising concerns for their pet and food safety. Evergy said planned work normally comes with a 24-hour notice, but emergencies or weather can lead to shorter warnings.  The Lawrence Times
  • Local scouts received extra support from recent firework sales as organizers enforced strict safety rules+ officials stated that all sales followed the proper protocols to keep everyone safe.  KCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faculty at Haskell warned Friday that proposed federal budget cuts, which would cut tribal college funding by about 90%, will leave the schools unable to operate as required — a move that may breach legal treaty obligations. Douglas County commissioners are drafting a letter to Congress urging them to protect the funding for tribal colleges.  The Lawrence Times

  • The Board of Zoning Appeals will meet at 6:30 p.m. on July 3 to review its agenda. Earlier this year, city facilities—City Hall and Parks, Recreation and Culture facilities—were closed on Feb. 18 due to a winter storm that created dangerous travel conditions.  City of Lawrence
