  • The Watkins Museum completed its Underground Railroad project for classroom use before federal officials terminated its $50K grant — community donations raised $13K to fill the funding gap.  The Lawrence Times
  • Hy-Vee is hosting a golf scramble to raise money for Variety KC — the fundraiser will let local golfers support the charity through friendly competition.  KCTV

  • A security officer found a man dead in a Midtown parking lot on June 12—police are investigating the death.  KCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 18, the University of Kansas Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa inducted 95 new members in Lawrence as chapter president Dietrich Earnhart led a ceremony that honored students who met a strict GPA threshold. Honorary member Arash Mafi spoke about the value of education + the tradition of signing the chapter register continues a practice dating back to 1912.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 5, a federal judge ruled that AmeriCorps must restore hundreds of millions in grant funding and thousands of service worker jobs in many states (the order does not apply to Kansas). Kansas officials said Governor Kelly’s request for a similar lawsuit to recover more than $33 million was declined by Attorney General Kobach on June 12 (the state found no federal law violation).  KSNT 27
