CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Federal officials released the Office of the Inspector General report that found a Bureau of Indian Education employee allegedly made unwanted comments and physical contact with student-athletes on the Haskell women’s basketball team — the investigation also revealed that the employee’s supervisor and other staff knew of the behavior but did not report it. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kansas college students will pay more tuition next school year after the Board of Regents approved increases on June 11 — Pittsburgh State will see a 2.5% rise, Fort Hays a 4% rise, Wichita State and Kansas State each a 3.5% rise, and the University of Kansas a 3% rise. Board members said the rates remain low compared to other states. KSNT 27
- ➤ International scholars will gather at KU from July 19 to 21 to discuss civility in politics at a free conference held at Apollo Auditorium in Nichols Hall. KU faculty and researchers will share views on tolerance and public service (the event is organized by KU’s Department of Philosophy and Center for Cyber-Social Dynamics with help from Monash University via the Research Talent Accelerator Fellowship program). - ➤ A group of neighbors dropped their lawsuit against developer Brad Ziegler — who planned to demolish the old East Lawrence building at 900 Pennsylvania St. for a restaurant — after a new land development code on April 1 removed the need for extra parking spaces. Ziegler filed a demolition permit on March 31, and the building’s future remains unclear. The Lawrence Times
