CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A beloved road trip spot in Lawrence reopened yesterday and now welcomes drivers and families to enjoy its historic charm — a sign that the local favorite is back in service. KCTV
- ➤ The Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission meeting is rescheduled to June 18, 7:30 p.m. at the Parks, Recreation and Culture Administrative Building in South Park — the meeting will be held in person and online, and public comments must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. on the day of the event. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Lawrence school board did not vote Monday on a plan to raise school meal prices by 10 cents for a third year as the change is needed to meet USDA requirements — officials said the board will vote on the proposal at its next meeting Monday, June 23 — so the district can avoid using general funds. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ Advocates for Immigration Rights and Reconciliation and the local chapter of Sanctuary Alliance will host a free info session on immigration at the Lawrence Public Library auditorium, 707 Vermont St, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14, where attendees will learn about legal statuses & protections, clear up common misconceptions and hear firsthand immigrant stories. - ➤ The Lawrence school district named Christine Caffey as the new principal of Hillcrest Elementary after she taught there for eight years and once studied at the school. Her appointment will begin July 1 as she takes over after Sarah Kruse left for a leadership role in Topeka. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ Lawrence school district data shows graduation rates for Native American students and ELL dropped by about 13% and 10% from 2019 to 2024 while overall rates rose from nearly 83% to about 87%. School board members and administrators are taking steps—such as integrating more Indigenous history into the curriculum and expanding alternative programs—to address the widening gap. - ➤ Lawrence Parks and Recreation staff told an advisory board about new plans to charge rec center memberships but did not share the actual prices until next month—staff will review the fee proposals at meetings on July 14 and July 15—as the move is meant to help cover a $1.8 million budget gap. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, June 9, KU scientists and nutrition experts urged a revision of federal guidelines on fish consumption during pregnancy because many women are limiting seafood and missing vital omega-3 nutrients needed for fetal brain development — studies showed that current advice has led to very low fish intake during pregnancy. - ➤ Researchers at Oklahoma State University said cattle producers in Kansas and other states should check their animals for the invasive Asian Longhorned Tick, which can cause deadly blood loss and multiplies quickly. They are asking ranchers to work with local veterinarians + report any sightings to help slow the tick's spread. KSNT 27
