COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Lawrence will celebrate Juneteenth on Saturday, June 14 with Underground Railroad bus tours from 8 to 10 a.m., a 1K fun run by the Boys and Girls Club starting at 9:30 a.m., and a parade beginning at 11 a.m. — the free event offers food trucks, live music, oral history stations, a kids corner and essay contest awards while local groups provide volunteer opportunities until 8 p.m. — all held in downtown Lawrence for all ages. - ➤ Sherell Yarbough has organized a Black Business Market to support local Black entrepreneurs by providing an accessible platform on Juneteenth. The market will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14 in the Flory Building at the Douglas County Fairgrounds — featuring 30 to 40 vendors offering diverse products and services. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Kansas announced on Thursday that a donor’s $10 million gift will support an entrepreneurship hub at the former McLain’s Market site—this hub will host several programs to help students gain practical experience and is part of a total $60 million donation for business and academic programs. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawrence City Council approved a plan to fill vacant storefronts for the upcoming World Cup—officials say the move will boost local business and revitalize downtown. The council will work with property owners to complete the plan in the coming weeks. KCTV
- ➤ The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that majority groups can now bring discrimination lawsuits in Kansas and Missouri by removing extra requirements imposed by some circuit courts, and the decision reaffirms that employment choices must be based on legitimate reasons while keeping protections for age, disability, whistleblowing + workers' compensation retaliation intact.
