  • A new study published Tuesday, May 26 shows that the decline of local newspapers may lower oversight and reduce incentives for corporate social responsibility, potentially impacting local business practices in Lawrence (and nearby areas).  University of Kansas

CULTURE NEWS

  • Free State High School theatre students earned multiple Blue Star Awards for their production of 'The Addams Family Musical: School Edition' at Starlight Theatre last November. Piper Northrop, Harper York, and the school orchestra each received top Tier 1 awards—recognizing lighting design, featured performance and overall orchestral excellence.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Five Kansas public universities have proposed in-state tuition hikes of 3.5% to 6% for next fall while Emporia State plans to keep rates unchanged. University officials say the proposals follow state budget cuts and await review by the Kansas Board of Regents.  The Lawrence Times

  • Kansas City transit services gear up for the World Cup with ConnectKC26 shuttles from June 11 to July 13 now covering Lawrence to help fans reach key hubs. RideKC bus fares resume on June 1 while the free streetcar links downtown — offering several travel options to local riders.  KMBC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Three people exposed to Andes hantavirus were discharged from University of Kansas Health System on May 21 after precautionary monitoring since May 13. They will continue daily checks until their 42-day observation period (ends June 7) while officials report no confirmed cases and extremely low public risk.  KMBC

  • Lawrence is celebrating soccer season ahead of the World Cup with events including a soccer talk at the Public Library on Thursday, May 28, an art exhibition opening Friday, May 29, and a local festival on Tuesday, June 16 & more set through early July.  The Lawrence Times
  • Algeria’s national team will train at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence ahead of group stage games at Arrowhead Stadium on June 16 and June 27. The squad, heralded for its storied upset history, brings a new generation of players to a World Cup journey that will mark its fifth appearance.  KMBC
