- ➤ The Busker Festival kicked off Friday evening in downtown Lawrence and will continue until Sunday. The event features street performers, artists and food vendors with activities on Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 7 p.m.—it also includes an Art Tougeau parade starting at noon Saturday near the Lawrence Arts Center. - ➤ KU Chabad leaders asked people to honor Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky—shot Sunday at the Capital Jewish Museum—by doing a good deed that spreads kindness. They said that performing a mitzvah will help the community heal and that a memorial for Sarah will be added to a new campus building under construction. KMBC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Researchers at the University of Kansas received nearly $1.5 million from the Kauffman Foundation to expand a three-year program that teaches computer and job skills to women leaving prison in the Greater Kansas City area. The program will soon work with local groups + Workforce Partnership and Kansas City Public Libraries to reach 1,000 more women + help lower repeat offenses. University of Kansas
- ➤ Chancellor Douglas A. Girod approved promotions and tenure on May 23rd for 44 faculty at KU Lawrence and Edwards and for 114 researchers at KU Medical Center — honors that will take effect at the start of the fall semester — with future announcements planned for instructional faculty. - ➤ Frank Arpan resigned as president of Haskell Indian Nations University after about two years and will remain until mid-June—official reasons were not given as the university works with its board on a leadership transition. No official replacement has been announced while the search for a new president begins. The Lawrence Times
