EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sixty-five KU Law students provided over 2,500 hours of free legal services during the 2024–2025 academic year, helping low-income residents with filing tax returns, expunging records, and receiving legal advice through the Kansas Bar Association’s Free Legal Answers Program. The school recognized 50 students on the Pro Bono Honor Roll for completing 15 or more hours while 15 others earned Pro Bono Distinction for reaching at least 50 hours. University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ FBI Director Kash Patel announced his agency would reassign 1,500 agents to violent crime hotbeds—adding 33 new positions to Kansas field offices including Topeka, Wichita and Jefferson City—following his May 8 testimony to block a proposed $500 million budget cut. Kansas Senator Jerry Moran said he hoped rural offices such as those in Garden City and Manhattan would also receive support as agents are ready to move when needed. KSNT 27
- ➤ Lawrence City Commission approved a rezoning request Tuesday evening to let developers build a two-story apartment building with 24 units on just over one acre near LMH Health — a vote of 3–2 that paves the way for future housing aimed at local workers. Developer Corby Rust said the plan includes 12 one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom units, internal parking, and new sidewalks along Third and Florida streets. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ The City of Lawrence is exploring risks of losing $8M in federal funds if it stops enforcing equal rights ordinances as outlined in a draft resolution that was removed from Tuesday’s meeting agenda — city officials will study compliance options to balance federal mandates with community needs.
