CRIME NEWS

  • A 32-year-old man died in Manhattan after a hit-and-run incident at around 5:45 a.m. on Thursday—police identified a 48-year-old truck driver from Jefferson City, SD as a suspect who was arrested and later posted a $15,000 bond.  KSNT 27
  • Lawrence authorities chased a driver who doubled the speed limit and passed cars on both shoulders after a Douglas County deputy spotted his reckless driving near Lawrence, and he drove over 100 mph on Interstate 70 through three counties into Kansas City—where a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper deployed spikes—and investigators later found his vehicle in a ditch as officers continue searching for him.  KCTV

  • Barry Anderson, one of the first ThrYve program participants, will graduate from KU this spring with a journalism degree focused on sports media—he credits the program for helping him overcome challenges and stay on track in his education.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Lawrence is asking for public feedback on a plan to add membership fees to parks and recreation facilities as part of the 2026 budget process. Residents can share their views by taking an online survey now and by joining scheduled conversations at local centers from May 27 to June 12 — their feedback will guide the final proposal.  City of Lawrence
  • Kansas Court of Appeals judges upheld Lawrence's ordinance that stops landlords from denying housing to voucher recipients—saying that state and local governments have the right to keep housing affordable; the City Commission will consider suspending enforcement on Tuesday to maintain federal funding.  The Lawrence Times
  • Lawrence will ban camping anywhere in the city effective Aug. 15 as the city expands shelter services for those in outdoor encampments—violators may face fines of up to $1000 or jail if they refuse safe alternatives. A coalition of unhoused residents led by Katie Kraus is meeting at 2:30 p.m. today at South Park gazebo to oppose the ban.  The Lawrence Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Jacob Clarke, supervisor of the Riley County Health Department Public Health Clinic, told 27 News that Kansas has seen a rise in measles with 56 cases statewide while Riley County has none as of today. He added that vaccines (for babies aged 12 to 15 months, children aged 4 to 6 years, and adults) are key to preventing this highly contagious virus from spreading.  KSNT 27
