Good morning, Lawrence. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 14th of May.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Darren Canady’s new play-within-a-play 'for…girls' will debut May 15 at Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City — the production features a director who casts only three white women for a play originally meant for seven Black women — and planned protests may lead to arrests.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Lawrence is shifting traffic on Iowa St. this week to allow paving work and new stormwater installation. Crews will re-stripe the road and remove the left-turn lane—drivers should follow all posted signs and plan for extra travel time.  City of Lawrence

HEALTH NEWS

  • The US now has 1,001 measles cases, with Kansas reporting 51 cases and one hospitalization across eight counties (49 in southwest Kansas) mostly among unvaccinated children. Kansas health officials warn that more cases will likely appear as summer travel begins.  FOX 4
  • A KU study found that more than half of pharmacy patients were happy with their care but many reported problems with hearing difficulties and access issues—especially among ethnically diverse patients with disabilities. The study suggests that pharmacies need better training and planning to ensure every patient safely uses their medicine.  University of Kansas

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 13th, a University of Kansas study found that professional women soccer players had fewer social media followers when their teams used shared accounts with men—more media posts and account check marks helped boost their numbers, and team market size did not affect their reach.  University of Kansas
