Good morning, Lawrence. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 9th of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student journalists from Lawrence High and Free State won state awards from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association — about 80 schools competed — earning honors in areas like cutline writing, social media, and video public service. These awards — which include achievements like a Pacemaker yearbook from Lawrence High — add to each school's strong journalism record.  The Lawrence Times
  • KU researchers visited schools across Kansas as part of the Blueprint for Literacy assessment to record teacher and student needs—data that will help inform decisions on teacher development to boost reading skills.  University of Kansas
  • Assessment and Technology Solutions at KU expanded its Kite Suite mini tests to give Kansas teachers more flexibility in assigning standards-based assessments throughout the school year. Over 540,000 mini tests have been completed so far, and the change comes from a contract amendment (aimed at faster student feedback) and will soon see more items added (to further support classroom learning).  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Lawrence and Douglas County have published an online dashboard that tracks homelessness data and shows nearly 600 people were experiencing homelessness as of March. The dashboard (covering data from December to March) also details shelter bed use and service changes to help guide future efforts to end homelessness.  The Lawrence Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • On May 8, the University of Kansas School of Nursing announced that a report finds many women in Kansas must drive long distances for maternity care because 59% lack local inpatient services—researchers noted that nearly 30% of ZIP codes are over 100 miles from high-risk care and that rural counties with high birth rates are most affected. The report was produced with the Kansas Center for Rural Health and is guiding efforts to improve access to care.  KCTV
