COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead announced a new program that gives families sensory sensitive time in a calmer setting. The program helps visitors who may get overwhelmed enjoy the farm — the initiative creates a welcoming space for everyone.  KCTV

CRIME NEWS

  • A parent left a gym bag with a gun at Lawrence High School on Tuesday and a student quickly took it to the office so that principal Quentin Rials and the school resource officer could secure it while police investigated the incident—officials said no one was arrested.  The Lawrence Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Kansas will host the 82nd Guild of Carillonneurs Congress from June 10 to 14 at the historic Campanile — a landmark with 53 bells — to offer free public carillon concerts for community members. Workshops and recitals will be held for conference attendees and more event details will be shared soon.  University of Kansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Science City opened its new Battle of the Brains exhibit on May 6 — designed by kids for kids, the interactive exhibit teaches visitors how light works.  KCTV
  • KU Engineering students won the 2025 Missouri Valley District Traffic Bowl Competition in Memphis in April by correctly answering questions on transportation topics. The team will travel to Orlando to compete at the ITE International Conference in August (student Tabatabaei also received a poster award for her research).  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three advocacy organizations filed a lawsuit Monday in Douglas County District Court against a law that rejects mail-in ballots if they do not arrive by 7 p.m. on Election Day—advocates say the rule harms rural, elderly, and disabled voters and violates equal protection.  The Lawrence Times
  • Lawrence city commissioners approved tax incentives yesterday for Q39 to rehabilitate a long-dormant downtown building at 639 New Hampshire St that once housed the Journal-World printing press. The project will bring about $7 million in private investment and support 88 permanent jobs while developers also consider adding 100 tech jobs, with the restaurant planning to open in summer or fall.  The Lawrence Times
  • Douglas County and the City of Lawrence launched a public dashboard that updates monthly to show real-time data on homelessness and tracks people using emergency shelters, transitional housing, street outreach, and other services. Officials say the tool is a key part of the A Place for Everyone plan to guide local investments in affordable housing — though it may not capture all individuals experiencing homelessness.  City of Lawrence
