- ➤ Free State High School alum Arthur Benson and two other KU students were named Goldwater Scholars, KU announced Thursday. The award supports STEM research by covering expenses up to $7,500 per year for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ KU professor Bruce Frey released his book Classroom Assessment in the Real World to help teachers choose assessment methods that match each classroom's needs (including performance-based tests and paper methods) on Thursday, April 30. University of Kansas
- ➤ On April 28-29, the ninth annual One Day One KU saw over 4,800 Jayhawks give more than 7,000 gifts totaling $5,137,966 to boost university programs and health services, setting a record for the event. University of Kansas

- ➤ KU leaders, donors, and community partners celebrated the groundbreaking of the donor-funded KU Entrepreneurship Hub on April 24 at 1420 Crescent Road; the three-story, 29,608 sqft facility for student entrepreneurs will continue construction this summer and finish in fall, 2027. - ➤ University of Kansas researchers published a study that shows uneven data and unclear roles among agencies leave communities at risk during heat waves. The paper calls for better funding and targeted support for vulnerable neighborhoods (low-income and outdoor workers) to improve heat response across cities. University of Kansas
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ KU researchers launched Phase II of the Employment First project to expand access to competitive integrated employment for Kansans with disabilities. The initiative is supported by state funding (one grant for $1.3M plus an additional $967,500) and will offer training to service organizations statewide. University of Kansas
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Local advocates urge officials to support residents with limb differences following declarations of April as Limb Loss Awareness Month. LMH offers a limb loss program and support group (meeting second Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.) as advocates push for simpler building code rules and improved insurance for prosthetics.
