CULTURE NEWS

  • A Saturday powwow at Hillcrest Elementary School brought hundreds together in Lawrence as second grade teacher Shelby Tosee organized the event to celebrate Native American culture with activities like the potato dance plus announcements of new Indian Youth ambassadors and intertribal clubs in four other schools serving nearly 400 students.  The Lawrence Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Kauffman Foundation chose the KU Center for Community Health & Development at the Life Span Institute to evaluate its Collective Impact Initiative aimed at boosting economic mobility in Kansas City. The center was awarded a $353,000 grant and will use its Community Tool Box—translated into several languages—to offer educational support for foundation staff and six coalition partners.  University of Kansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawrence schools have struggled with large class sizes for the 2025-26 year as enrollment dropped and teaching positions remain open. In April 2024, the board approved revised student-teacher ratios and reserved seats for non-district transfers while the district adjusts staffing (with ratios of 24 for elementary and high schools and 21–22 for middle schools).  The Lawrence Times
  • The University of Kansas Concrete Canoe team celebrated 50 years by unveiling Jayhawk’s Revenge at the 2025 Mid-America Student Symposium, where it earned second overall, first in project proposal and second in technical presentation. The all-concrete design shows a legacy of hard work+ the team plans to pass on its skills to new members+.  University of Kansas
  • Jason Kingman, who works as the assistant principal and athletic director at Southwest Middle School, has been named the new assistant director of special education for Lawrence Public Schools and will start on July 1—he earned his bachelor’s at KU and his master’s at Hamline University and spent five years working with special education programs.  The Lawrence Times
  • The University of Kansas announced the Self Graduate Fellowship for 2025—2029 and selected twenty top doctoral students to join the largest cohort in the program’s history. The four-year fellowship will cover full tuition, fees, research support, and professional development awards as these students begin their studies at KU.  University of Kansas
  • KU will host filmmaker Shalini Kantayya for a virtual event on April 30 at 6 p.m. (via Zoom) where she will speak on how human prejudice makes bad technology. The event is part of the Common Cause initiative (registration is free) and will let students ask questions about human rights and tech.  The Lawrence Times
