- ➤ Lawrence will host its 61st car part swap meet from May 3 to 5 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds—450 seller spots have been rented with 1,500 cars expected to attend. The event, one of the largest in the nation, will donate its proceeds to charity and local 4-H groups. KSNT 27
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lawrence police tracked a missing set of AirPods to a North Lawrence motel on Monday and recovered several hundred stolen items—including laptops, tablets, keys, and IDs—while also returning musician Outlaw Jake’s prized guitar stolen from his car, and they have contacted seven theft victims so far. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, the musical Lions of Lawrence High School will sing and dance to hits from Elvis Presley to Taylor Swift at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at 1901 Louisiana St. The show — the last 'Showtime' for choir director Dwayne Dunn — marks his retirement at the end of the year after more than 40 years in music. - ➤ Donna Ginther, a KU economist who leads research centers, was elected into the American Academy of Arts — Sciences Class of 2025 along with nearly 250 other leaders including novelist Amy Tan and chef José Andrés. Her work on the economics of science and policy earned her this honor, and it adds notable strength to KU’s research reputation. University of Kansas
- ➤ Three University of Kansas students received the prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program and will get three years of financial support with an annual stipend of $37,000 and a cost of education allowance for their institution. The award was given to Joseph Hand (physics and astronomy), Cecilia Paranjothi (chemistry) and Jasmine Perea (ecological engineering) after more than 12,000 applicants were considered. - ➤ A new study from the University of Kansas shows that over many years, populations of plants and animals can rise and fall together even when far apart—an insight that helps scientists understand long-term environmental changes and guide farming and conservation efforts. University of Kansas
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Sarah Bariya took over the Sexual Trauma and Abuse Center in January and soon found that the center could not meet payroll, which led to furloughs on Feb. 4 and permanent cuts of five staff members + the center is working to recover from reduced VOCA funding and a long waitlist for counseling services.
