CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Lawrence Police Department continued its search for a suspect near New York Elementary and Central Middle School and asked residents to avoid the area around 14th Street and Connecticut Street. The suspect — a 28 year old man with black hair and blue eyes who reportedly fled by bike during an attempted arrest — is considered armed and dangerous. FOX 4
- ➤ Police said 28-year-old Cadence E. Nunez Ruckman, who is considered armed and dangerous and has warrants for aggravated assault and domestic battery, ran from officers on Thursday near 14th and Connecticut Streets in Lawrence and is 5-foot-6 and weighs 170 pounds with black hair and blue eyes; anyone who sees him should call 911 without approaching him. - ➤ The University of Kansas ranked 37th among public universities on the National Academy of Inventors’ Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted Utility Patents list for 2024 — receiving 36 utility patents and ranking 59th among all institutions. University of Kansas
- ➤ The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare will host a panel discussion and networking event on April 23 to launch its new Center for the Advancement of Healthcare for Everyone — the free event will offer 1.5 hours of continuing education credit with panel talks from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the BEST Building on KU Edwards Campus and poster presentations until 4:30 p.m., with online participation available. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City contractors will close the intersection of 8th and Tennessee Streets starting Monday, April 21 for the Jayhawk Watershed Project to replace aging pipes and improve stormwater flow. The closure will last through mid-summer—traffic on Tennessee will detour to Vermont between 6th and 9th while local access remains for residents and emergency vehicles. City of Lawrence
- ➤ The Historic Resources Commission voted 2—2 last Thursday against revised plans to build 15 new row houses next to the former Borders bookstore downtown at 700 New Hampshire St. Developers may appeal the decision to the City Commission. The Lawrence Times
