  • Ric Averill and company will host a staged reading of Fire Messiah: A Community Musical of Miracles to let locals help shape the production; the event will be held Monday, April 20 at Theatre Lawrence (4660 Bauer Farm Drive) at 7 p.m. Admission is free with donations accepted.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KU junior Nora Jennings has been named a finalist for the 2026 Harry S. Truman Scholarship after an interview on Wednesday; the prestigious award honors her public service + community engagement, and winners will be announced later this month.  University of Kansas
  • Lawrence High School’s Career and Technical Education students showcased their yearlong projects at the fourth Innovation Expo on Wednesday night, featuring culinary displays, live painting, and biomedical demos + hands-on learning that highlight real career pathways.  The Lawrence Times
  • KU professor Lisa Dieker co-edited a book that takes a full-systems approach — pairing research and policy to address the special education workforce shortage by detailing recruitment, preparation and retention strategies. The volume was presented at AERA in Los Angeles on April 9 and offers tools for educators and policymakers.  University of Kansas
  • Haskell and KU students will showcase research from muskrat populations to earthquake frequency at the 26th annual student symposium tomorrow from 4-5:30 p.m. at Stidham Union on Haskell campus.  The Lawrence Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A section of U.S. 59 south of Lawrence will operate with one lane in each direction starting Monday, Apr. 20 and lasting until early September due to the K-10/South Lawrence Trafficway expansion, and southbound drivers must use the detour via W. 31st Street plus Haskell Avenue for eastbound K-10 access.  The Lawrence Times
