The University of Kansas named Alexa Magstadt its 80th Barry M.

Goldwater Scholar on April 9, recognizing the junior from Shawnee who is majoring in molecular, cellular & developmental biology and minoring in Spanish. She said the award will help her focus on advancing her research in cancer biology as she prepares for a future in medicine and science.

Staff at Hilltop Child Development Center in Lawrence left a child alone in a locked van on a field trip last Friday and later found the child upset but unharmed—field trips are now on hold while the center reviews its procedures.

The child's parents were notified immediately and state agencies received a report.
